Yodi was a 14 year old spayed cat who presented for peeing blood. Normally we would like to get a urine sample to see if there was evidence of infection or stones and maybe even run blood work to make sure she had enough red blood cells and her organ function was good. Sometimes patients have other ideas and don’t want to cooperate for a work up. Yodi was a little grumpy with us so we were unable to much. We treated her for abdominal pain using an NSAID and gave her an antibiotic injection for a presumed urinary tract infection (UTI). When Yodi came back for a recheck, the bloody urine hadn’t improved. She was also a lot more cooperative and we used a custom made cat-bag to restrain her while we did an ultrasound. We were able to visualize her bladder and see a mass. Bladder cancer doesn’t have a great prognosis but sometimes we can improve quality of life with pain meds. We tried to make her comfortable but we weren’t able to fix her. Thank you to Yodi’s owner for allowing me to write about her case to educate others on this sad disease.
