Broccoli is a 1 year old French bulldog who had a mass growing on his side and stertorous (noisy) breathing. Dogs with short noses are called brachycephalic and often snort and snore. This leads to a number of problems with their teeth, back and breathing. Brachycephalic dogs often overheat because panting and breathing is the main way dogs cool down. They cannot sweat like humans because they lack sweat glands on most of their bodies and have thick fur coats. The overheating is so bad it can be life threatening. You should always be cautious when taking boxers, pugs, bostons and other brachycephalic dogs out in the heat. In Broc’s case, we decided to make his nostrils bigger while we were removing the mass from his side. This will improve air flow through his nose so he will be less prone to oxygen deprivation, heat stress, and snoring. This is a procedure often done when spaying and neutering dogs because they are already under. See our before and after pics of this sweet little boy.
